Addiction psychiatry, craniofacial fellows, plastic surgery resident among new UMMC faculty

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.

Saurabh Bhardwaj, M.D.

Dr. Saurabh Bhardwaj, recently an addiction psychiatry fellow at Northwestern University, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of psychiatry.

After receiving his M.B.B.S. from Dr. Vaishampayan Memorial Medical College, Solapur, India, in 2006, Bhardwaj completed an internship in medicine, surgery and related branches at Grant Medical College and J. J. Group of Hospitals, Mumbai, India. He served as a rural medical officer followed by multiple other clinical experiences, including being a staff physician and junior resident in the Department of Psychiatry at the Maulana Azad Medical College and LNJP Hospital, New Delhi, India.

He completed a general adult psychiatry residency from 2013-17, including an electroconvulsive therapy fellowship in 2016, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, Pennsylvania, and an addiction psychiatry fellowship at Northwestern University, McGaw Medical Center and Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, Illinois, from 2017-18.

An active member of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Society of Addiction Medicine and the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, Bhardwaj is the author or coauthor of five articles published in peer-reviewed journals, three peer-reviewed presentations and two book chapters.

Jared Davis, M.D.

Dr. Jared Davis, a recent graduate of the University of Louisville plastic surgery residency program, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of surgery.

Davis received his B.A. in history from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, in 2006, and his M.D. from Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tennessee, in 2010. Next, he completed general surgery residency from 2010-15 and plastic surgery residency from 2015-18 at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. While in Louisville, he also earned his M.B.A. at the University of Louisville in 2018, served as a staff physician providing coverage to rural emergency rooms with Inspire Medical, and served as a staff general surgeon at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center.

Davis is also an active member of several organizations and has authored eight peer-reviewed publications. His research interests include surgical skill development and breast cancer reconstruction.

Ian C. Hoppe, M.D.

Joined the UMMC faculty on Aug. 13, 2018

Dr. Ian C. Hoppe, recently a craniofacial fellow at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of surgery.

Hoppe received his M.D. in 2011 from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He completed a general surgery internship from 2011-12, a general surgery residency from 2012-14, a plastic surgery residency from 2014-16 and was chief resident in plastic surgery from 2016-17 at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. He completed a craniofacial fellowship from 2017-18 at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania.

Active in multiple plastic surgery organizations, Hoppe is the author or coauthor of 39 articles in peer-reviewed professional publications and two book chapters. He has given more than 20 presentations and authored or coauthored more than 20 posters presented at scientific meetings nationally and internationally.

Amy W. Smith, D.N.P.

Dr. Amy W. Smith has joined the Medical Center’s School of Nursing faculty and is currently teaching an interdisciplinary, interprofessional health policy class for doctoral students of multiple schools across the Medical Center.

After receiving her B.S.N. summa cum laude in 1991 from UMMC, where she served as nursing student body president and received the Christine L. Oglevee Award, Smith served as an R.N. and later as a case manager in internal medicine at the G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Jackson while concurrently earning her M.S.N. summa cum laude at UMMC in 1994. She then served as a family nurse practitioner in the Mississippi Delta (Pickens, Canton, and Greenville) and became an affiliate faculty member at UMMC in 1996. She returned to the VA to serve in a variety of clinical and leadership roles at the local, regional and national levels; currently serving as the deputy chief medical officer for the South Central Veterans Affairs Health Care Network, serving veterans in eight southern states. She received her doctorate summa cum laude from Rush University in Chicago in 2008.

A fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Smith is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the American Nurses Association. A member of Sigma Theta Tau, Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Theta Kappa, she has served on numerous national and regional committees of the Veterans Health Administration and state committees of the Mississippi Board of Nursing and the Mississippi State Department of Health.

The author or coauthor of nine published articles, including peer-reviewed journals, Smith has given 22 invited presentations nationally. Her research interests include quality, effectiveness and safety innovations. She is a strong proponent of evidence-based practice and has proven experience translating research into practice by leading change. She values team-based health care and believes that each discipline uniquely contributes to best practice. Smith has devoted her career to leading change at the local, regional and national levels so all members of the health care team can strive for excellence.
